Review of a Review

Review of an Article Review of Cindy Sherman                           Jackie Brown

Cantrell, Scott. “Art Review: Cindy Sherman’s theatrical photos provoke contemplation at the DMA” Guide Live (06 April 2013 4:18PM) Web. Tuesday 30 April 2013 2:22PM http://www.dallasnews.com/entertainment/columnists/scott-cantrell/20130406-art-review-cindy-shermans-theatrical-photos-provoke-contemplation-at-the-dma.ece

Cantrell’s article demonstrates a conservative opinion of Cindy Sherman’s bold photographs, revealing his bias opinion against her uniquely stated points of stereotypical lifestyles that she exemplifies through each photograph. Sherman’s suggestive, alter ego, self-portraits are miscommunications to the audience of Dallas News readers due to one individual’s interpretation of her images currently on display at the Dallas Museum of Art.
Although Scott Cantrell compares her work to being still images of theatrical action scenes, I interpret her work from a more feminist point of view. Each female she creates herself as being suggests a series of events that have affected the fictional woman Sherman presents, & within an image she reveals their inner attitude of that alter ego she is creating of herself.
Cindy Sherman has impacted many artists & photographers all around the globe, but Cantrell’s scrutiny did not give Sherman the credit she deserves for her worldly works due to her artwork. “On the one hand, she’s a grown-up version of a little girl” Cantrell comments, due to the props & outfits Sherman uses to reveal an alternative personality that doesn’t represent her own.
As Sherman’s work can be taken into playful manner, her early work associated with dolls with vulgar positions (including vomit) represent the uproar of AIDS spreading from one victim to another. She is not just a jack of one trade, which is fact. Rather, Cindy Sherman has been doing photography for over 30 years, & has the advantage of being an artist during worldly events in which she creates images that express times that have made history from the huge impact they had on civilization.
In relation, Sherman displays to her audience a bold, canny perspective that reflects people in our surroundings. Others may even see themselves in some of her photos. The age range of self-portraits she has made gives her the superior position to attract more people to her articulate identities. As for Cantrell, there is so much more than meets his eye when it comes to the openly provocative & other times sensitive Cindy Sherman.
